I had some extra time this morning to spend on the way to work so I spent an extra 10 minutes feathering the gas pedal.
(I need a new TPS sensor for one of my tires I think. All my tires are at 33psi but that orange ! light is saying one is low.)

After driving my F350 for a few months I realized I was going to need to purchase something to get me back and forth to work or the cost of gas and maintenance was going to eat me alive. So I went on the lookout for something that would give me really good gas mileage on the highway and have really low maintenance requirements.
Since I am who I am, I did my (overly complicated) research and narrowed my search down to just a few cars all of which were sub-compacts. I easily test drove over 30 cars but all of them had issues. This was partly due to my criteria.
I wanted a car that:
- Did better than 40MPG.
- Was less than 7 years old
- Could hold 4 people if needed
- Had less than 80k miles
- Was less than $5000
In the middle of July I stumbled across a Ford Fiesta SFE. I hadn’t considered these in my search, because the KBB was such that I didn’t see how one would fall into my criteria. When one popped up though I jumped at the chance to test drive it.
Holy shit was it rough.
The car was filthy. It was like someone put a 12 pack of Dr. Pepper onto a can shaker then opened them all up inside the car. There were dents. Lots and lots of dents. The front tires were in really bad shape. The check engine light was on. And while this didn’t bother me, I’m sure it set some others off that it was a manual. In fact that was the reason the car was being sold. The owners son couldn’t drive a stick. They had just replaced the clutch.
But, I put all of that out of my head and just focused on the car and took it on a test drive.
And had a blast. The little car was a riot to drive.
I took the car to O’Reilly’s and put on a OBD2 scanner to see why the check engine light was on and found out that it wasn’t a big deal. I checked all of the fluids and saw that they were all in ok shape. I looked at absolutely everything I knew to look at to see what was broken on the car and while cosmetically this thing was trashed, mechanically it looked to be in pretty good shape.
So after a little haggling I was able to pick this guy up for $4000!
Here are the specifics:
- 2015 Ford Fiesta SFE (3 cylinder turbo with manual transmission)
- 1 owner
- 57k miles
- 44 MPG avg
KBB on it showed that in Good shape it was an $8k car. I don’t know that I believe that, but what I do know is that I’ve been driving it for a little more than 3 months and love this thing. I did the math on it and it will have paid for itself in a little more than 18 months.
We finished with what was planned a little (lot) early in class today.
Earlier in the week we had talked about how it would be cool to be able to have a way to show potential employers exactly what it meant when our resumes said something like “Intermediate Pneumatics Knowledge” or “Advanced PLC Knowledge”. I had the kids start putting together Google Sites but…
Since we had the spare time I guided several of my students through the process of registering a domain, finding a host, pointing the DNS to the host, telling the host what domain we were pointing at them, installing some open source software, etc…
In the process I decided to switch this guy back to WordPress. It does ten times more than I want it to, but at the end of the day it’s easier for me to get to look like I want.
