When Roll Hunting quarters you can expect to find a bunch of clad (1965 and up) Washingtons with an occasional surprise thrown in just to grab your attention.
If you’d like to read a little bit of history on the Washington quarter I would suggest reading the Coin Resource Article (new window).
Composition Hunters - There is still some silver floating around in Quarter boxes, however if you’re strictly a Composition Hunter I would suggest hunting halves (and possibly nickels). On average you might find 1 silver quarter per box, the vast majority of which will be Washingtons. You might occasionally run across a Standing Liberty and if you’re insanely lucky a Barber.
Variety Hunters - I would highly recommend looking at Jose Cortez’s site (new window – it’s ugly but there’s a lot of info). He’s put together quite the list of varieties and RPMs.
Set Hunters – The Clad Washington quarter set isn’t exactly hard to complete. There aren’t any true keys but there are an awful lot of quarters in the clad set. Just in face value alone the set is over $40. For some this is reason enough to not make the attempt.
Before putting a clad Quarter set together I would recommend purchasing 3 H.E. Harris & Co. folders; Washington Quarter #3 Folder 1965-1987, State Series Quarters Folders Vol I 1999-2003, and State Series Quarters Folders Vol II 1994-2008.
