I feel incredibly lucky. I was offered the chance to help coach Track and Field at the high school today. Track is by far without a doubt the sport I enjoyed competing in the most. It wasn't what I was best at, just the one I liked the most.
Sports at MHS are during 6th period which up to this point has meant I haven't been able to coach as I teach during 6th hour. But the head track coach came up to me last week and asked if I'd be interested in helping. I told him I'd love to but also told him I had a 6th hour class. That didn't matter to him. A combination of factors has made him very short handed and as such he was in desperate need of help.
Today was the first day of practice for me and holy cow there are a bunch of kids going out. It also looks like the girls and boys programs have been combined. Add to that the middle school kids haven't started yet and I can only imagine how stressed out the head coach is feeling. Between the 7th, 8th, 9th, JV, and Varsity we're looking at around 150 kids practicing at the same time every day. That's a total of at least 10 squads we're going to have to put together, possibly more if we end up with any A and B squads.
I suspect this is going to eat into my metal detecting time but it's so worth it.
